How to Choose the Right Paper Weight for Paper Bags

When buyers source paper bags, one of the most common questions is:

How thick should the paper be?

Unlike disposable paper plates, paper bags are usually selected by paper weight (GSM) based on the type of product they need to carry.

A heavier paper bag isn’t always better. The ideal paper weight depends on the bag’s size, the weight of the contents, and how the customer will use it.

70–80gsm – Lightweight Everyday Packaging

Paper bags made from 70gsm to 80gsm paper are commonly used for lightweight products such as bread, pastries, sandwiches, snacks, and pharmacy items.

These bags are economical, easy to fold, and suitable for businesses that serve high volumes of customers every day.

90–100gsm – The Most Popular Choice

For many retailers and foodservice businesses, 90gsm to 100gsm is the standard.

This paper weight offers an excellent balance between strength, appearance, and cost, making it ideal for takeaway bags, grocery bags, bakery bags, and general retail packaging.

It remains the most frequently requested specification for everyday paper bags.

110–120gsm – Extra Strength for Premium Packaging

When carrying heavier products or creating a more premium shopping experience, buyers often choose 110gsm or 120gsm paper.

These bags feel stronger in the hand and are commonly used by boutiques, gift shops, cafés, and specialty retailers.

Custom printed paper bags also benefit from the improved stiffness and presentation offered by heavier paper.

150gsm and Above – Luxury Retail Packaging

Luxury brands and premium retailers sometimes specify 150gsm paper or heavier.

These bags are designed to carry heavier products while creating a high-quality appearance that reflects the brand.

Although they cost more to produce, they add value where presentation is just as important as function.

Choosing the Right Paper Weight

There is no single “best” GSM for every paper bag.

A bakery selling fresh bread has very different packaging needs from a fashion retailer or a supermarket.

The right paper weight should match the product, the customer’s expectations, and the budget.

At our factory, we work with customers to recommend the most suitable paper weight based on the bag style, size, carrying capacity, and intended application.

Choosing the right specification helps create packaging that performs well, looks professional, and delivers the best overall value.
